Over

Have you ever been so far in over your head that you couldn’t tell which way was up?

That was me. I’d love to tell you I handled it well. I didn’t. I got short with the people I love. I wasn’t sleeping much. I kept thinking, if I can just get over this one thing, then we’ll be okay. And then there was another thing. And another one after that.

We use that word a lot. Overwhelmed. Overworked. Over it. I think I said “I am so over this” about once a day for a year.

But here’s what I didn’t expect. Somewhere in the middle of all of it, I realized I was still here. The wave came over me and I came back up. Then it happened again. I didn’t beat anything. I wasn’t strong. I just kept coming back up, and I don’t think that was me.

There’s a promise I hold on to, that when you pass through the waters they will not overwhelm you. It doesn’t say you won’t go through them. It says they don’t get the last word.

OVER is what it sounds like when the water is over your head, and what it sounds like when you come back up for air. It’s also, I hope, what it sounds like when a hard season is finally over.

If you’re under it today, hold on. It will not always be like this. One day you’ll look back and say, that’s over.
