Steady

Why do we continue to speed up when everything in us is begging to slow down?

I am the worst at this. Give me a free hour and I will fill it. Give me a quiet morning and I’ll find a list to make. Somewhere along the way I started believing that fast was the same thing as faithful, and that if I stopped moving, everything I was holding would hit the floor.

Here’s what I’m learning. Fast is not the same as far. I can sprint for a week and end up exactly where I started, only more tired. But the things in my life that have actually lasted, my marriage, my kids, the handful of friends who really know me, none of those were built in a sprint. They were built slow. Same people, same table, over and over. Boring, really. Steady.

Think about a river. It doesn’t cut through rock by being strong. It cuts through rock by showing up every single day for a very long time.

I want to be that kind of person. Not the loudest. Not the fastest. Just there, day after day, doing the next small thing. I’m not there yet. Most days I still catch myself running.

STEADY is a song for the long middle. Not the exciting start and not the big finish, but the part in between where it feels like nothing is happening and everything is. If that’s where you are today, keep going. Slow is fine. Steady is enough.
